'The Welloe', family friendly beach-side pub, 5 minutes walk from the house.
We provide plenty of information about the house and area when you book. Here are a just a few ideas and tips.
What to bring
Cornwall weather is very changeable so please be sure to bring raincoats as well as swimming gear! We would recommend that if you plan to walk you also bring good waterproof walking boots, as the coastal path can be muddy in places. We also suggest you bring slippers for walking around the house as we prefer no outdoor shoes in the house. We provide normal towels, but if you plan on going to the beach please bring your own beach towels.

The Beach
The beach is 2 minutes walk from the garden. For almost all activities, the beach is best at low to mid tide. There is a hot water outdoor shower, please use this to avoid bringing sand and water into the house. The tidal range in this part of England is up to 16ft (5m) depending on the time of the month. Tides are biggest just after the moon is new and full and the highs will almost cover the beach. If there are big waves at high tide they will tend to “dump” on the shore and can be dangerous, so please keep an eye on sea conditions and the tide times if you planning to be out in the water for a long time. If the lifeguard is on duty (you will see the flag), do not surf or boogie board between the red and yellow flags. If you are an adult that can swim you can surf anywhere else on the beach - but if you have young children who are trying out surfing for the first time then they should stay between the black and white flags as this is the only surfing area monitored by the life guards. |

Museums and Places
- There are plenty of interesting and beautiful places to visit. You'll see some photos on our 'Location' page.
- Penzance has a small museum which sometimes has some nice exhibitions: http://www.penleehouse.org.uk/
- Penzance also has a beautiful sculpture park with a good cafe . http://www.tremenheere.co.uk/.
- National maritime Museum in Falmouth http://www.nmmc.co.uk/index.php?/explore/content/the_museum/, and the Eden Project https://www.edenproject.com/ near St Austall (a bit of a drive - but maybe consider on your way home).
- There is a museum dedicated to undersea telegraphy (which is a bit niche - but interesting !) - http://telegraphmuseum.org/ - Porthcurno is also a very beautiful cove and has an outdoor theatre http://www.minack.com/
- The beautiful Godolphin House 0844 800 1895 is a National Trust property dating back to the 16c and was considered in the 17c to be the most fashionable house in Cornwall. About 10 minutes drive away, there is a lovely house to explore and 550 acres of woodland estate. There may not be anywhere to eat here, so check before you leave.
- St. Michaels Mount 01736 710507 is a 10 minute drive down the road towards Penzance. At low tide you can walk (5 mins) across the cobbled causeway from Marazion, otherwise take the little ferry, phone 01736 710265 for tide and ferry details. You can enjoy the gardens or pay to tour the house. We love visiting this other worldly place and sometimes take the canoes to Long Rock and circumnavigate and have tea at the little harbour. Check winter opening times. You can park in the sea front car park at Marazion. Take a picnic or buy lunch on the island or in Marazion.
Walks
- From the house you can walk to the beach (2 mins) and also eastwards along the coast path to Portleven (about 2 hours) http://coastalwalker.co.uk/2013/07/02/116-porthleven-to-praa-sands/ or west towards Perranuthnoe (a bit shorter) http://coastalwalker.co.uk/2013/07/03/117-perranuthnoe-penzance-to-lamorna-cove/.
- You can get something to eat at the end of either of these walks. In Perranuthnoe we would go to http://www.thecabinbeachcafe.co.uk/ for a sandwich, or to http://www.victoriainn-penzance.co.uk/ for dinner (but you will need to book - it is v. good and popular). In Porthleven you can try http://www.theshipinncornwall.co.uk/ for a traditional pub, or there are lots of good restaurants here including Kota http://kotarestaurant.co.uk/
- There are also some nice circular walks around Praa Sands http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/308/
- Other walks we love are the one around Loe Bar: http://www.iwalkcornwall.co.uk/walk/the_loe and the Lizard peninsula - both on the west side like http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/721/ and the east side like: http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/210/
For Children
- The national seal sanctuary is about 20 minutes from the house and is a fun half day out especially for children. Pick a nice dry day as it is mostly outside. If you call before you can time it so that you are there for the feeding. 01326 221361
- RNAS Culdrose is a fun day out for children and plane spotters. It is the largest helicopter training base in Europe there are guided tours of the facility. Jets regularly take off from the airstrip and as it also used for flight deck operations training, there are lots of old jet planes that you can see. If you are lucky you might be here for the annual air day (usually July) which is like a mini Farnborough. Call (01326 565085) to check they still do the tours.
- The Minack Theatre (1736) 810181/471 is about half an hour from us, located right next to the Telegraph Museum. A spectacular setting to watch a show and do take a picnic. The quality of the entertainment can be a little unpredictable, but don't let that stop you as it is a magical experience. It is also good to visit in the day, but the seating is steep, so avoid if you suffer from vertigo!
- There are two cinemas nearby and they are rarely busy. You can park outside both. Call Penzance Savoy on (01736) 363330 or Helston Flora on (01326) 569977 or goto Merlin Cinemas.
Golf
The nearest club is a nine hole course in the holiday park. It is very hilly and only in fair condition but has some nice views and worth a couple of hours to go round. The best proper courses nearby are at http://www.mulliongolfclub.co.uk and www.capecornwall.com . There is also a 14 (?) hole parkland course around RNAS Culdrose which I think is open to all comers. This is a good place if you are a beginner and especially if you like aircraft!
